The mill is located on the Matagami municipal territory in Quebec, some 776 km (482 miles) northwest of Montreal.
The town of Matagami was established in 1963 shortly after the discovery of mineral deposits including zine, copper and gold. It is named for the Cree First Nation word meaning “meeting of the waters”.
Bisson and Bisson established the first sawmill in Matagami in 1968. Following a fire in 1974, the company relocated the sawmill to the city industrial park. The Ayotte Family acquired controlling interest in Bisson and Bisson in 1979 and invested in modernizing the mill and its equipment.
The mill was acquired by Domtar Inc. in 1998 and finally by EACOM in 2010.
